Plans

This page contains multi-year review and planning documents about the Unit for Social and Environmental Research. Every 2-3 years the director prepares a concise strategic plan for internal use.  There have been three plans so far.

USER Plan 2009-2010: synthesis and new research directions

The main objective for 2009-10 is to synthesize and set new research directions. This will involve changes to both content of the research program and structure of the organization.

USER Plan 2007-2008: linking knowledge with action

The review of 2005-2006 plan highlighted that good progess had been made with respect to the 2005-6 objectives in terms of research output and management systems, but that performance was not so strong in terms of people and contribution to solutions or practices.  The main objective for 2006-7 is therefore to articulate and demonstrate novel ways of linking knowledge with action. One way expect to do this is by experimenting with new approaches to partnerships and collaborating centred on problem-solving rather than disciplinary groupings. Expect to learn by doing.

USER Plan 2005-2006: raising the standard

The review of 2002-2004 was mixed pointing to successful establishment but many other problems with mangement systems. Most noteworthy was a lack of research outputs despite projects being completed. The specific goal for 2005-2006 was to lift the standard. By this was meant research output, practical solutions, people, and management.

USER Plan 2002-2004: creating a new research group

The focus of the first plan was very much on setting a vision, recruiting staff, establishing management systems and developing a multi-year research plan and program to implement it. It emerged out of earlier scoping work in 2000-2001 with a four-person team originally under the provisional label "Environmental Change Unit".

Measures of success

We are interested in learning from experiences. Reviews and evaluations are part of every-day culture in which experimentation and innovation are valued.  The success of programs, people and the organization is measured broadly, not just by products or activities, but more focussed on indicators of development such as originality, support for colleagues, and contributions to solutions.
