Fisheries - ensuring food security

The working group is led by Richard Friend.

Purpose and Approach

Inland wild capture-fisheries and aquaculture are central to livelihoods and economic development in the Mekong Region. Fisheries and aquaculture, in turn, are dependent on maintaining a range of ecosystem services and biophysical conditions which are increasingly threatened by a range of in-stream and land-based human activities. The impact of large dams and inter-basin diversions on flow regimes, water temperature, sediment and nutrient is of particular concern.

In this sectoral case study we are exploring the way in which different fisheries and aquaculture interests are represented in water use negotiations around the Mekong Region. We are working in several locations, including Tonle Sap (Cambodia), Songkram, Pak Phanang, and Upper Ping (Thailand), Attapeu (Lao PDR) and the Mekong Delta (Vietnam ). In each area partner organisations are involved in specific dialogue or policy processes that are unfolding.
